University of Montana

Over 11,000 students and growing

Located on the far west quarter of Montana in Missoula, the University of Montana has stood for over a century. First established in 1893, it has for over a decade operated as the largest campus in the University of Montana system (three others exist).

The school itself is broken up into five different independent colleges, including:

In addition, it also features five schools, including:

Finally, for those students wishing to finish studies, the University of Montana also features a Continuing Education program.

Like many universities, the University of Montana considers itself an informal city (within Missoula itself). The campus boasts a number of restaurants, retail outlets, medical offices, banks, post offices and even its own ZIP code.

Aside from its massive enrollment - some 11,000 students - the University of Montana also boasts one of the most impressive scholarship and fellowship rankings.

Most impressive may be the number of Rhodes Scholars, which are those enrolled in the world’s oldest and most respected global fellowship. These scholarships, named after the late Cecil John Rhodes, have been awarded every year since 1902. Based on academic merit, Rhodes Scholars are granted two free years of study at the prestigious University of Oxford in England. For the record, the University of Montana in Missoula ranks fifth in the United States for these honors.

Athletics

Unlike Montana State University and its Yellowjackets, the University of Montana still offers a vibrant football program. With most sports teams named the Grizzlies (the women’s basketball team affectionately call themselves the “Lady Griz”), the school prides itself on competing in the highly regarded NCAA Big Sky Conference, and has done so since 1963.
