Montana State University

Home of the Yellowjackets

Located in Montana’s most populous and fastest-growing city, Billings, MSU was first established in 1927. Classified as a public university, Montana State offers hundreds of unique degrees, with nearly 5,000 students attending in pursuit of them.

Montana State University offers a number of different types of degrees, including associate, bachelor’s and master’s. In addition, those attending the school can pursue certificates in other areas, such as a particularly strong Education and Rehabilitation major.

Many students attend Montana State University because of its uniquely natural environment. Although Billings continues to grow at an incredible rate, its population has only recently passed the 100,000 mark. That prevents those attending from feeling suffocated by the urban sprawl associated with other student experiences in cities like Los Angeles, New York or Detroit. Further helping this idea is the nearby access to hiking trails and sightseeing tours to Glacier National Park or Yellowstone National Park.

Programs of Study

Although Montana State University offers a number of arts programs, its strongest field is science. Those interested in a Bachelor of Science degree can choose from a variety of biological specializations, such as environmental sciences, medical laboratory science or psychiatric rehabilitation. Students wishing to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree are presented with choices from automobile collision repair to paramedic studies to practical nursing.

Sports

With the school colors a mix of blue and gold, those attending Montana State University immediately become Yellowjackets. The school includes a few prominent athletic programs, including:

However, the most prominent sports are the Yellowjackets’ basketball and baseball programs. Both have risen since in the 1970s, when football was discarded.

Montana State University Yellowjacket basketball competes within the NCAA Division II and Heartland Conference. The team openly recruits prominent high-school students, and it shows; the team has led its division in successful three-pointers (per game) for the last 10 years. As a result, only once has the team finished with a losing record over that time span.
