Montana Skiing

Make the most out of all those mountains

Given its many mountain ranges and the natural appeal of its beautiful landscapes, Montana is a primary hotspot for winter skiing. Millions of tourists visit the state every year, staying in some of the most luxurious resorts in the United States.

Big Sky Resort

Nestled in the Rocky Mountains themselves, Big Sky Resort is owned and operated by Boyne USA Resorts. The idea for its creation was first devised by NBC newsman Chet Huntley, and the resort itself was opened in December of 1973.

Boyne USA purchased the resort in 1976, and their investment in the area has led to many of its impressive upgrades (including the 1995 construction of the 15-passenger Lone Peak Tram).

In the last three decades, Big Sky has grown to a major ski destination with 150 different runs, but it offers golf and tennis activities to visitors during the warmer months of the year.

Moonlight Basin

Sharing its largest peak with nearby Big Sky Resort, Moonlight Basin is also located within the Rocky Mountains. Both resorts share the popular Lone Peak Tram, which can carry passengers all the way to the summit of Lone Peak. Visitors can also reach this extreme elevation by hiking, a popular activity at the resort.

Like Big Sky, Moonlight Basin also boasts a golf course for warmer days. In addition, it features fine dining areas, spas and luxury accommodation. It offers a less expensive experience than Big Sky Resort, with all day lift tickets costing just $40.

The primary owner of Moonlight Basin is Moonlight Basin Ranch, which has invested heavily in the conservation of the surrounding area.

Showdown Ski Area

One of the oldest ski resorts in Montana is Showdown, which was first established in 1936. Located near both Great Falls and White Sulphur Springs, visitors fly down the Little Belt Mountains of Central Montana. Considered a small resort with a lower elevation than either Big Sky or Moonlight Basin, Showdown gets most of its patrons during the weekend. Despite its limited size, the resort offers a number of exciting activities for those who visit.

Note : Travelers should keep in mind that Showdown Ski Area is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
