Montana Tourism

Battlefields, parks and skiing

In a quick list of popular activities for families devising their summer vacation, camping is almost always near the top. Parents can introduce children and teenagers to the outdoors by hiking through mountain passes, wooded trails or through the plains of historical lands. All of the above can be found in Montana, one of the few American states still largely untouched by the overbearing encroachment of smoggy city life.

Visitors to Montana are often naturalists, interested in the state’s many beautiful landscapes. These include the plains and valleys around the historic site of the Battle of Little Bighorn, the forests of Glacier National Park or the mountainous vistas above the Rockies.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

Shortly after the end of America’s divisive and bloody Civil War, a new conflict emerged between a growing white population and the country’s original landowners, the Native Americans. Perhaps the most famous single event showcasing the hostility between the two came during Custer’s Last Stand, on June 25, 1876 - the Battle of Little Bighorn. In the valleys surrounding the famous river, George Armstrong Custer’s mighty 7th Cavalry was cut down by a fierce and underestimated band of Lakota / North Cheyenne warriors. Tours of the site and even re-enactments are one of the main tourist draws every year.

Glacier National Park

Home to hundreds of different animals and over 1,000 different plant species, Glacier National Park is one of the most peaceful and well-maintained conservation areas in all of the United States. It contains about 130 lakes and two different mountain ranges, with access provided by the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road, which is the only method of crossing the park from one side to the other.

Montana Skiing

With a number of different mountain ranges, including the famous Rockies, Montana is home to some of the best skiing in the world. Some of the most popular locations include Big Sky Resort and Moonlight Basin, competing hotels that indulge visitors with fine dining, activities and of course, phenomenal skiing experiences. These resorts even offer summer, spring and fall fun, including golfing and tennis facilities.
